Advantages

Technical details

Each unit is defined by its factor relative to the base unit of its quantity, and the conversion is value × source factor / target factor, rounded to 12 significant figures to avoid floating-point errors. Temperature isn't proportional and is converted via kelvin (K = °C + 273.15; °F = °C × 9/5 + 32). Exact definitions are used: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L. For data, 1 KB = 1000 bytes (SI) and 1 KiB = 1024 bytes (IEC 80000-13). The month is an average and the year is 365.25 days. Mach is taken at sea level. It also includes US and UK pints and gallons, cups and tablespoons, carats, stone, knots, psi, mmHg, kWh, BTU and electronvolts.
