What is Clean text?

When you copy text from a PDF, a website, an email or a document, it often comes with junk: extra spaces, line breaks in the middle of sentences, HTML tags or invisible characters that cause problems when you paste it elsewhere.

This tool cleans it up in one click. Turn on the cleanups you want and see how many changes each one made.

How to use it

  1. Paste the text you want to clean.
  2. Turn rules on or off in the What to clean panel.
  3. Check the number of changes for each rule.
  4. Copy or download the clean text.

Technical details

Available rules: double spaces and tabs to a single space; spaces at the start and end of lines; multiple line breaks (keeps at most one blank line) or all line breaks (joins the text into one paragraph), which are mutually exclusive; emojis, including those composed with skin-tone modifiers, ZWJ and flags (Unicode properties Extended_Pictographic and Regional_Indicator); HTML tags and entities such as   or &; invisible characters (zero-width spaces, BOM, direction marks, soft hyphens) and non-breaking spaces, which become regular spaces; curly quotes “ ” ‘ ’ « » to straight quotes; duplicate lines; and list numbering or bullets (1. 2) a) - • * and Roman numerals). By default, the spaces, multiple line breaks and invisible characters rules are on.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove line breaks from text copied from a PDF?

Paste the text and turn on All line breaks. Everything will become one continuous paragraph.

How do I remove double spaces?

Keep the Double spaces rule on: it turns several consecutive spaces or tabs into a single one.

Can I remove emojis from a text?

Yes. Turn on the Emojis rule and all of them are removed, including flags and emojis with skin tones.

What are invisible characters?

Characters you can't see but that are in the text, such as zero-width spaces or the BOM. They can break searches, passwords or forms.
