What is Text compare?

This tool puts two texts side by side and marks what has changed: additions in green and deletions in red. Use it to review versions of a contract, an article, a list or a piece of code.

You can compare line by line, word by word or character by character, and ignore differences you don't care about, such as capitalization or whitespace.

How to use it

  1. Paste the original text on the left and the modified one on the right, or open two files.
  2. Choose to compare by Lines, Words or Characters.
  3. Choose the Side by side or Unified view.
  4. Turn on Ignore case, Ignore whitespace or Hide unchanged lines if needed.
  5. Check the summary of additions, deletions and changes.

Advantages

Technical details

The comparison uses the jsdiff library, based on Myers' algorithm for the longest common subsequence. In line mode, adjacent deleted and added lines are paired as modifications and a word-level diff is calculated within each one; in word and character modes, a sequence of equal, added and deleted segments is produced. The ignore case and ignore whitespace options normalize the text before comparing. CRLF and CR line endings are unified to LF. The calculation has a time limit so very different texts don't block the page. Files up to 10 MB.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two texts to see the differences?

Paste each version into its box. The differences appear instantly: additions in green and deletions in red.

Can I compare two files?

Yes. Use the Open button on each side to load text or code files.

What's the difference between side-by-side and unified view?

Side by side shows both versions in columns. Unified merges them into a single column, with − for deletions and + for additions.

Can I ignore changes in capitalization?

Yes. Turn on Ignore case, and also Ignore whitespace if you only care about content changes.
