What is Excel, CSV and JSON?

This tool lets you view and convert spreadsheets without having Excel installed. Open an Excel, LibreOffice, CSV or JSON file and see it as a searchable table.

Then convert it to the format you need: a CSV to import into another program, an Excel file to work with, or JSON to use on a website or in an app.

How to use it

  1. Drag in your Excel, ODS, CSV, TSV or JSON file.
  2. Review the data in the table, switch sheets or search for a value.
  3. Choose the output format: XLSX, CSV or JSON.
  4. Adjust the options: delimiter and BOM for CSV, structure for JSON, and whether the first row is a header.
  5. Click Convert and download the file.

Advantages

Technical details

Workbooks are read with SheetJS (xlsx), which supports XLSX, XLSM, XLS and ODS, while CSV and TSV files are parsed with PapaParse; JSON files containing an array of objects, an array of arrays or an object of arrays are also accepted. Exporting to XLSX includes all sheets; CSV and JSON export the selected sheet. In object JSON, the first row is used as keys and numbers that arrive as text from a CSV are converted to numbers. The viewer shows 100 rows per page. 100 MB limit per file; large files are processed in the background so the page isn't blocked.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Excel to CSV?

Add the .xlsx, choose CSV, select the delimiter (semicolon if you'll open it in Excel with a European locale) and click Convert.

How do I convert a CSV to Excel?

Add the CSV; XLSX is selected by default. Click Convert and download the .xlsx.

How do I convert Excel to JSON?

Add the file, choose JSON and the Array of objects structure so each row becomes an object with the column names as keys.

Why do accented characters look wrong when I open the CSV in Excel?

Can I open LibreOffice files?

Yes, .ods files open and can be converted to XLSX, CSV or JSON.
