What is Voice dictation?

With this tool you type by speaking: press the microphone button, dictate, and the text appears on screen. It's faster than typing for emails, notes, assignments or long messages.

In Spanish you can say punctuation marks such as “coma”, “punto” or “abrir interrogación” and they're written for you. You can correct the text while dictating and, when you're done, copy or download it.

How to use it

  1. Choose the dictation language.
  2. Press the microphone button and allow access.
  3. Speak normally; in Spanish, say “coma”, “punto” or “nueva línea” to add punctuation.
  4. Correct anything you need directly in the text box.
  5. Press the microphone again to stop, then copy or download the text.

Advantages

Technical details

It uses the Web Speech speech recognition API (SpeechRecognition) in continuous mode with interim results. Availability depends on the program: it works in Chrome, Edge and Safari, not in Firefox; Chrome and Edge send the audio to their recognition service, so they need a connection, while Safari can work offline on some devices. If the engine stops after a silence, it resumes automatically until you press stop. Spanish commands: coma, punto, punto y seguido, punto y aparte, punto y coma, dos puntos, puntos suspensivos, opening and closing question marks, exclamation marks, parentheses and quotes, guion, nueva línea and nuevo párrafo. When joining fragments, spacing around punctuation is adjusted and sentences start with a capital letter. Languages: Spanish (Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and the United States), Catalan, Galician, Basque, English (US and UK), French, German, Italian and Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil).
