What is Text to speech?
This tool reads aloud the text you type or paste. It's handy for listening to an article while you do something else, checking how a text sounds, practicing pronunciation or helping people who find it hard to read on screen.
You can choose from the voices available on your device, change the speed and pitch, and pause whenever you like. As you listen, the current sentence is highlighted and, if the voice supports it, the word being read.
How to use it
- Type or paste the text you want to hear.
- Choose a voice; voices in your language are shown by default, and you can show all the others.
- Adjust the speed and pitch.
- Click Read aloud, and use Pause, Resume or Stop whenever you need.
Advantages
- Prioritizes Spanish (Spain) voices and lets you see all the others.
- Speed from 0.5x to 2x and adjustable pitch.
- Highlighting of the sentence and the word being read.
- Reads long texts without cutting off, in chained chunks.
Technical details
Reading uses the speech synthesis API (Web Speech SpeechSynthesis) with the voices installed on the system, so the list varies by device and operating system; they are sorted with es-ES first, then other Spanish variants and then the system language. Some voices are marked as “online”: these are generated by an external voice service that receives the text. Text is split into chunks of up to about 220 characters by grouping sentences, because some engines cut off long utterances at 15 seconds. Speed ranges from 0.5 to 2 and pitch from 0.5 to 1.5. Word-by-word highlighting depends on the voice emitting word boundary events. The tool plays the audio but does not create a downloadable file.
