What is Extract audio?

With this tool you pull the sound out of a video and save it as an audio file: the music from a clip, an interview recorded on video or a lecture so you can listen to it on your phone.

You can choose MP3, which works everywhere, WAV if you want maximum quality for editing, or copy the original track as is when the format allows it.

How to use it

  1. Upload the video you want to extract the audio from.
  2. Choose the format: MP3, WAV or Original.
  3. If you choose MP3, select the quality between 96 and 320 kb/s.
  4. Click Extract audio and download the file.

Advantages

Technical details

The first audio stream is taken (-map 0:a:0) and the video is discarded (-vn). MP3 is encoded with LAME (libmp3lame) at the chosen bitrate; WAV is written as 16-bit linear PCM (pcm_s16le). Original mode copies the stream (-c:a copy) when the codec has a simple container: AAC to M4A, MP3 to MP3, Opus to .opus, Vorbis to OGG and FLAC to FLAC; for other codecs (for example AC-3 or PCM) this option is disabled. Accepts MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI, 3GP, FLV, TS and WMV, among others, up to 500 MB.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a video to MP3?

Upload the video, leave MP3 selected, choose the quality (192 kb/s works for almost everything) and click Extract audio.

Which MP3 quality should I choose?

128 kb/s is enough for speech, 192 kb/s for music in general and 320 kb/s if you want the highest MP3 quality.

What does the Original option mean?

It copies the audio track exactly as it is inside the video, without re-encoding. It is instant and loses no quality, but it is only available with AAC, MP3, Opus, Vorbis or FLAC.

Can I extract the audio from an MKV or MOV video?

Yes, as long as the file has an audio track. If it doesn't, the tool lets you know.
