What is Word counter?

This counter instantly tells you how many words and characters a text has. It's useful for school assignments, articles with a minimum word count, descriptions with a character limit or social media posts.

It also estimates how long it takes to read the text and to say it out loud, and shows the words you repeat most so you can vary your vocabulary.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text, or open a text file.
  2. Check the words, characters and reading time at the top.
  3. See sentences, paragraphs, lines and speaking time under Details.
  4. Look at the list of most frequent words and their density.

Advantages

Technical details

Words, sentences and characters are segmented with Intl.Segmenter following Unicode rules (UAX #29) for Spanish, so a composite emoji or an accented letter counts as a single character (grapheme). Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Reading time is calculated at 230 words per minute and speaking time at 150. The 12 most frequent words exclude Spanish and English stop words, numbers and one-letter words, and their density is the percentage of the total word count. You can open .txt, .md, .csv, .html and .json files up to 20 MB.
