What is Colour and palette?

If you like a color in a photo, logo or screenshot and want to use it in your design, this tool tells you its exact code. You move your mouse or finger over the image, a magnifier shows you the pixels and one click saves the color.

It also automatically calculates the image's main color palette, sorted by how much each color appears, so you have a consistent combination ready for your website, presentation or brand.

How to use it

  1. Drag in the image you want to pick colors from.
  2. Move the cursor over it and use the magnifier to aim precisely.
  3. Click to save the color to your list and copy its HEX, RGB or HSL code.
  4. Check the dominant palette and choose how many colors you want (5 to 12).
  5. Export the palette as CSS variables or JSON.

Advantages

Technical details

The eyedropper reads the RGB value of the pixel under the cursor on the original image and shows an 11 × 11 pixel magnifier. Up to 24 colors can be saved, without duplicates, in HEX, rgb() and hsl(). The dominant palette is calculated with k-means on a copy scaled down to 160 px, with a deterministic k-means++-style initialization (it starts from the average color and adds the most distant colors), ignoring transparent pixels; the result is sorted by the percentage of pixels in each cluster. Export generates CSS custom properties or a JSON with the codes. Accepts images up to 50 MB, HEIC included.
