What is Remove background?

Removing the background from a photo is useful for product shots, a professional profile picture, photo montages or making stickers. This tool automatically detects the main person or object and removes everything else.

The result is downloaded as a PNG with a transparent background or, if you prefer, with a solid color behind it. You can compare before and after with a slider and process several photos in a row.

How to use it

  1. Drag in one or more photos.
  2. Choose the model: “Fast” for most photos or “Precise” for hair and fine edges.
  3. Choose whether you want a transparent or colored background.
  4. Click “Remove background” and wait for it to finish.
  5. Check the result with the slider and download the PNG or the ZIP.

Technical details

Segmentation uses @imgly/background-removal with ISNet models: “Fast” (8-bit quantized, about 55 MB) and “Precise” (16-bit floating point, about 100 MB). The model is downloaded the first time it is used and then cached. Output is always a 32-bit PNG with an alpha channel at the original resolution; if you choose a background color, the mask is composited over a solid fill. Accepts JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, BMP, GIF and HEIC up to 25 MB per image. The best results come from a well-defined subject with good contrast against the background.

How do I remove the background from a photo for free?

Which model should I choose, fast or precise?

The fast one works for most photos. The precise one takes longer and is a bigger download the first time, but it cuts out hair and objects with fine edges better.

Can I use a white background instead of transparent?

Yes. Choose “Color” in the Background section and select white or any other color.

Why is it slow the first time?

Before processing, the AI model has to be downloaded (about 55 or 100 MB depending on the one chosen). After that it is already available and runs much faster.
