What is Video to GIF?

This tool turns a section of video into an animated GIF, the format that plays automatically and on loop in chats, forums, emails and websites.

You choose the clip on the timeline, decide how many frames per second and what width you want, and download the GIF. The shorter and smaller it is, the lighter the file.

How to use it

  1. Upload the video.
  2. Mark the clip on the timeline (up to 30 seconds).
  3. Set the frames per second and the width in pixels.
  4. Turn Loop on or off.
  5. Click Create GIF and download it.

Technical details

The GIF is generated in two passes with ffmpeg. In the first, palettegen with stats_mode=diff creates a 256-color palette optimized for the areas that change. In the second, paletteuse applies that palette with Bayer dithering (bayer_scale=5) and diff_mode=rectangle, which only redraws the changed region and reduces the file size. Scaling uses the Lanczos filter while keeping the aspect ratio; width ranges from 120 px up to the original width with a maximum of 1080 px. Fps is set between 5 and 30 and the maximum clip length is 30 seconds. Looping is controlled with -loop 0 (infinite) or -1 (once).

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GIF from a video?

Upload the video, select the clip on the timeline, adjust fps and width, and click Create GIF.

Why is my GIF so large?

The GIF format is not very efficient. To shrink it, shorten the length, lower the fps (10–12 is usually enough) or reduce the width.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 30 seconds. Even so, beyond 10 seconds the file is usually too large to share.

Does the GIF loop?

Yes, by default. You can turn off Loop so it plays only once.
