What is Extract frames?

This tool takes images out of a video: a snapshot of a specific moment, several stills spread across the video or one every few seconds.

It is handy for choosing a thumbnail, saving a scene, preparing a storyboard or reviewing a recording. The images come out at the same resolution as the video and you can download them one by one or all together in a ZIP.

How to use it

  1. Upload the video.
  2. Choose what to extract: Evenly spaced, Every N s or One moment.
  3. Set the number of frames, the interval or the exact moment on the timeline.
  4. Choose JPG or PNG format and click Extract.
  5. Download the images individually or all in a ZIP.

Advantages

Technical details

Each frame is obtained with ffmpeg by seeking to the moment (-ss) and extracting a single frame to PNG; if fast seeking fails, it is retried with accurate seeking after the input. PNG is lossless; JPG is generated from the PNG at quality 0.92. Up to 300 frames can be extracted per operation; in Every N s mode the minimum interval is 0.1 s. Files are named with the minute, second and hundredths of the moment (for example, video-01m23s40.jpg). Limit of 500 MB per video.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a still image from a video?

Upload the video, choose One moment, move the marker to the moment you want and click Extract frame.

What quality are the extracted images?

The same resolution as the video. PNG has no lossy compression; JPG uses a high quality setting.

How many frames can I extract at once?

Up to 300 per operation. If your interval would produce more, the tool warns you so you can increase it.

JPG or PNG?

JPG takes up much less space and works for almost everything. PNG keeps every pixel exact and is better if you are going to edit the image.
