What is Convert format?

With this converter you change a video's format so it opens anywhere: turn an iPhone MOV into MP4, an MKV into MP4 for your TV or an MP4 into WEBM for a website.

When possible, conversion is almost instant and loses no quality, because only the file's wrapper is changed. If the chosen format needs different codecs, the tool re-encodes it and lets you choose the quality.

How to use it

  1. Upload the video you want to convert.
  2. Choose the output format: MP4, WEBM, MOV, AVI or MKV.
  3. Check the method shown: Fast lossless or Re-encode.
  4. Adjust the CRF quality and, for WEBM, the VP8 or VP9 codec if it is re-encoded.
  5. Click Convert and download the file.

Advantages

Technical details

The file is first analyzed with ffmpeg to check whether the video and audio codecs are compatible with the target container (for example, H.264, HEVC, MPEG-4 or AV1 with AAC, MP3, AC-3 or Opus in MP4). If they are, a remux with stream copy (-c copy) is done, with no quality loss. If not, it is re-encoded: MP4, MOV and MKV to H.264 (libx264, yuv420p) with AAC at 160 kb/s; AVI to MPEG-4 Part 2 with the XVID tag and MP3 at 192 kb/s; WEBM to VP8 + Vorbis or, optionally, VP9 + Opus at 128 kb/s. Quality is controlled with CRF between 18 and 35. MP4 and MOV are written with +faststart. Encoding to WEBM is noticeably slower than to MP4. Limit of 500 MB per file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MOV to MP4?

Upload the MOV, choose MP4 and click Convert. If the video already uses H.264 or HEVC with AAC, the change is instant and lossless; if not, it is re-encoded to H.264.

Does converting a video reduce its quality?

Not when only the container needs changing: the data is copied as is. There is only loss if re-encoding is needed, and you control it with the CRF.

What is the difference between VP8 and VP9 in WEBM?

VP9 compresses better and produces smaller files at the same quality, but takes considerably longer to encode. VP8 is faster.

Can I convert MKV to MP4 without re-encoding?

Yes, as long as the MKV has video and audio compatible with MP4 (for example H.264 with AAC). The tool tells you before converting.

Which format is best for sharing?

MP4 with H.264 and AAC is the most compatible: it works on phones, computers, TVs and social media.
