What is Crop video frame?

With this tool you change the shape of a video: for example, turn a landscape video into a vertical one for Reels, TikTok or Shorts, or make it square for your Instagram feed.

You can crop by moving a frame over the picture to choose which part stays, or keep the whole video and fill with black or white bars until you reach the new aspect ratio.

How to use it

  1. Upload your video.
  2. Choose the aspect ratio: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or Free.
  3. Decide whether to Crop or Add bars.
  4. If you crop, move and resize the frame over the picture; if you add bars, choose black or white.
  5. Click the process button and download the MP4.

Technical details

Cropping is applied with ffmpeg's crop filter on the video's visible dimensions (taking rotation into account), rounding width and height to even values as yuv420p requires. Bars mode uses the pad filter, centering the image and enlarging the canvas to the chosen ratio in black or white. In both cases the output is MP4 with H.264 (libx264, CRF 20, veryfast preset) and AAC audio at 160 kb/s, with +faststart. Available ratios: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 and free (crop only). The minimum frame size is 32 px. Limit of 500 MB per file.

How do I turn a landscape video into a vertical 9:16 one?

Upload the video, choose 9:16 and Crop, place the frame over the area you want to keep and process it. If you don't want to cut anything, choose Add bars.

What format do Reels and TikTok use?

Vertical 9:16. For the Instagram feed, 1:1 and 4:5 are also used.

Can I add bars instead of cropping?

Yes. Add bars mode keeps the whole video and fills with black or white bars up to the chosen ratio.

Does changing the framing reduce quality?

The video is re-encoded at high quality (CRF 20). When cropping, the final resolution is that of the chosen frame.
