What is Watermark?

A watermark on a PDF shows that a document is a draft, that it is confidential or who it belongs to. It also helps mark copies you send to others, for example with “Copy for the bank”.

You can use text or an image, such as your company logo, and place it in the center, in a corner or repeated across the whole page. Before applying it you see exactly how it will look.

How to use it

  1. Drag in the PDF.
  2. Choose “Text” and type it, or “Image” and upload a PNG, JPG or WEBP.
  3. Adjust size, color, opacity and rotation.
  4. Choose the position or “Tile” and the pages: all or a range.
  5. Click “Add watermark” and download the PDF.

Advantages

Technical details

The watermark is drawn with pdf-lib as vector content added to each page, without rasterizing the document. Text uses Helvetica Bold from 8 to 200 pt; if it contains characters outside the WinAnsi encoding of the standard fonts, it is embedded as an image at 4× resolution. PNG and JPG images are embedded directly and their width is expressed as a percentage of the page (5% to 100%). Opacity from 5% to 100%, rotation from −90° to 90° in 5° steps and nine positions with a half-inch margin, or tiling in a rotated grid with alternate rows offset. Each page's own rotation is taken into account so the watermark appears upright. The preview is generated by applying the actual operation to a copy of the page.
