Technical details
The .docx (Word 2007 or later) is parsed with mammoth, which converts the document's semantic styles (headings, paragraphs, nested numbered and bulleted lists, tables, links, bold, italic and underline), and laid out on A4 with jsPDF using Helvetica, with line wrapping, page breaks and checks so headings aren't left alone at the bottom of a page. Margins of 13, 25 or 35 mm and base text of 10, 11 or 12 pt. PNG and JPEG images are embedded; EMF and WMF formats cannot be included and you are warned. If the document has characters the standard PDF fonts don't support (Arabic, Chinese, emojis), it is generated as an image: it looks the same, but the text isn't selectable. Headers, footers and custom fonts are not reproduced. Older .doc files must first be saved as .docx.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert Word to PDF without Office?
Drag in the .docx file, choose margins and font size and click “Convert to PDF”. You don't need any software.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
Not directly. Open it and save it as .docx (Word 2007 or later), then convert it.
Is my Word document's exact formatting kept?
The structure and main styles are kept: headings, bold, lists, tables and images. Custom fonts, headers and footers are not reproduced the same way.
Will I be able to copy the text in the PDF?
Yes, in most documents. Only if it contains characters such as Arabic, Chinese or emojis is it generated as an image, making the text unselectable; in that case you are warned.
